Native American Princess

Native American Princess
Nespilim Girl

Oil on Canvas, 24" X 30"

This Native American girl is depicted standing near the Nespilim River in the state of Washington. The Nespilim were a relatively small band of Native Americans that lived north of the Columbia River, in the valley of the Nespilim River.

Prior to the middle of the 19th century, the use of deerskin garments (as worn by this girl) had become common. The style of hairdressing illustrated in this painting was borrowed from the tribes east of the Rocky Mountains.

Sadly, few representatives of this tribe survive today (Circa 1910).
