White Horses of the French Camargue

The White Horses
of Camargue

Oil on Canvas, 30" X 40"

The Camargue Horse is found only in southeastern France. They are believed to be descendants of prehistoric horses from the Paleolithic period some 17,000 years ago.

Because of their small size, the Camargue horse could more accurately be described as a pony. They are strong, hearty animals that can run full speed in mud up to their chests. When they are born, they are black or dark brown in color and gradually turn white with age.
